Bread and Tears
By James McGurk

He held out his hand
…………………………For a piece of bread
And I could see
…………………….The sweat on his brow
As he lifted the bread
…………………………To his mouth
Closed his eyes and whispered
……………………………..Thanks Jesus
………………………………….For now
Then I remembered the questions
…………………….Am I my brother’s keeper?
And to whom do the poor
………………..On the streets belong to
…………………………If not me and you?
And why
……….Do the bread lines grow deeper?
If there is so much
…………………………To throw away
Couldn’t some be saved
………………..To ease the pain
……………………………..Of a starving day?
Because every time
…………………………I hear the words
……………………………..Thanks Jesus for now
It reminds me
………………..I’m only here
…………………….By the tears
…………………………And sweat
……………………………..Of his brow
