The Best of Us
By Galit Breen

A breeze wisps my hair, cools my cheeks.
Sliding off my flip flops, I cross my toes on the porch railing.
The sturdiness of our home–worn wood, peeling paint–roughs against my skin.
I don’t pull away.
Bonfire remnants–delicious and smoky and crackling and lasting–trail towards me.
The first twinkles of golden stars glisten the night sky.
Jason and I sit shoulder to shoulder, somehow small within this quiet.
Life whispers in our background.
Fireflies glow their fleeting wonder.
This magic is not lost here.
The very best of us within fingertip reach.

Galit Breen’s poem Footsteps Through Fall appeared here in November 2011.
