You read Silence by Mike Berger back in April of 2010, and you will remember it as an exploration of sound with equal elements of complaint and humor added to the mix. Today Mike’s poem isn’t leavened with humor; instead, it is an evocative exploration of grief.
Darkest Hour
By Mike Berger
The evening slams shut;
no sun to warm or light the way
and this evening of regret.
Darkness clouded my mind;
I couldn’t see. That tough old
man should have lived forever.
Wallowing in disbelief–no, no.
It cannot be. A single tear
splashes down my cheek.
Staring into the darkness of
my room, I looked for his face.
There is nothing there.
How I loathe this awful dark;
how I loathe me. Didn’t have
the chance to say goodbye.
This is my darkest hour.
Regrets. A hard pill to swallow.
Very powerful. Good work.
