It is still January, there is still time to revisit the resolution thing. Bobbie Troy’s poems, Dear Diane (Pushcart Prize nominee), Soldier, and Merry Christmas, My Love,
have touched many readers. Her words resonate. No change today as
Bobbie gives us a poem many can relate to. Read it before you face your
own mirror and keep its message before you as resolutions wither and
die away.
Facing Self-Doubt
By Bobbie Troy
she leaped across
the bathroom rugs
like a frog on lily pads
to keep her feet
from getting cold
it was the hour
that everyone hates:
just before dawn
when yesterday’s fears
have not been allayed
and today’s not yet faced
she turned on the light,
looked in the mirror,
and saw it again:
the familiar sliver
of self-doubt
well, she thought
at least it’s a sliver
and not a slab
then she announced to the mirror:
i will let you stay for a while,
my old friend
just to keep my ego in check
i will not, however,
let you keep me
from becoming a better writer
this year or any year
just love not a sliver but a slab!
Deep and thoughtful. Many feel this way about their own reflections. Never give up!
Thanks, Lynn. One of my friends said she will print it and post it next to her mirror.
Bobbie, your work is always good. No matter what the mirror says. Heartfelt piece on our journey through lie.
Thanks, Jeanette. I think some self-doubt is healty, as long as it does not keep us from doing what we want to do.
