Britt Gambino is currently studying poetry for an MFA program at The New School in New York. Her poems have recently appeared or are forthcoming at anderbo.com, Decomp, Xenith, Battered Suitcase, Moon Milk Review, and the Arava Review. Britt is passionate about discovering work by newer poets, and she has been a fan of ee cummings, Mark Doty, Adrienne Rich, and Louise Gluck for years. She studied with Denise Duhamel as a young student, more recently with Michele Battiste and Erica Wright. This poem lends itself to live performance (where I heard it first!) and makes excellent use of humor.
Groove 1/2/3

When the subway car doors open, the people step
out like a fashion show–runway models underground.
A receiving line at a wedding–Congratulations!
to the happy couple (if there are any couples here).
Better yet, a soul train–I’m just waiting for someone
to bust some crazy move over the threshold between the train and the platform. The next time, they’re on
the other side, waiting for me, I’m gonna shimmy my way out
fabulous to the beat of Luscious Jackson, Nelly, 50 Cent,
or even the Bee Gees, just break the fuck down.
a little running man, Will Smith style
circa
The Fresh Prince
for good measure.
