Ice cream heroes
By Sarah Endo

Wrestle frozen boulders from Chilly Cow
to trunk to school; dodge buckets and mops, extricate
hand truck from custodian’s closet; fold silver
legs from fake wood laminate tables, prop
open on blacktop, shake-test for stability.

Dangle sleeve-pushed-up arms
into vats of dripping white, brown, and green;
scoop into bowls; hand out spoons; smooth
wadded sweaty dollar bills; make change.
This way, please.
