our moment*
By Linda M Crate

i take my shoes off
and throw them on the lake
to be two steps
on the water; because
i’ve always felt a strong tie
to the sea, stronger than the one
most have to the land–

you never understood me,
and you didn’t even try
i was just too different a bok
for you to swallow, words
so complicated i made you ill;
because books were the enemy
in your twisted little world,

we’re leaving with willow trees–

rosebuds dance in my hair
a rosemary blush of sunset that
rests comfortably upon my heart;
what was the question again?
i am a cloud floating on the edge
of obscurity, with a touch of crimson
for i am the finest wine you’ll drink

every time it rains, i hang my
hopes on the wings of your stars
because i won’t forget you; i
know something good is going to
happen on the tissue paper wings of
the thinnest smile, but it will still be

joy burgeoned forth from oblivion–

some day you’ll hold my hand,
and you will understand my bliss
when it’s you dancing in the sun lit
pools beside me, and the world is
forgotten with all its problems for
a day, and all you can remember is

the kiss of the wind that brushes
your hair from your eyes, as the
ocean blows back waves of old
and new; one day we’ll meet these
crossroads and this moment will
be ours and we will truly live.

*Author’s Note: Our Moment was largely inspired by the lovely singer Kate Bush; a few of the lines are borrowed from her. It is an ekphrastic poem inspired by the author’s current boyfriend.
