Overwhelmed

By Mildred Speidel

You’re like a fragile, delicate flower,
Beauty others see as deep
Exuding from each petal
Effortlessly with grace and ease.

Everyone sees you and sighs
How sweet and delicate you are.

They don’t see you in the night
Tossed by the winds of life
Struggling to stand against
The elements.

You have grown tired, longing
To return from whence you came.

They all see you slowly bending.
Your petals have faded.
Weakness causes you to dip
Closer to the earth.

Dewdrops fall from the newly pale
Petals. They weep for you. You

Cannot cry for yourself anymore.
I watch you finally fall, silent, to
The earth. Everyone misses you

Your beauty, your joy. Yet they
Never knew the strength it took
For you to stand. Now the time has

Come. Lie safely in the arms of
Mother Earth … Rest.
