Stonework in a Garden
By Molly Frederick

Flowers large and small—purple and orange,
white or pale blue—softly lean against
hard, spare comfort.
Frills of green lightly drift above loam-dark
petticoats.
Structure and release commune in
learned discourse.
Flowers that fade, stones that endure.
Contrasts and distinctions.
Differences.
Shoots and streamers dwell together
in disarray.
Sent aloft to flare as fireworks—to fall.
Celebrating life’s brief dream and
transitory hold upon the steadfast earth.
