Taking Back the Memories
By J.B. Hogan

I’m taking back the memories,
memories that you tried to steal,
that you stole, for a while.

I let you have them, for a while,
but now I’m taking them back.

They’re my memories and
just because I’m nothing to you now
doesn’t mean they weren’t
good memories.

They were great memories,
fun and beautiful and
sometimes sad and
for some reason you
came to despise me so much
that you tried to take them
from me.

But you can’t have them.
They’re my memories, too,
part of my life.

So I’ll just pretend you were
someone else that I knew,
someone that I liked, maybe
even loved. But I won’t
fall for that again.
No, I won’t think of you
that way. Not anymore.

All I want are the memories back.
And now I have them—again.
You can’t keep them anymore,
they’re too good to be wrapped
in hate.

That’s all gone now.
I have my memories back.
