Watermelon at the Beach
By Laura Zucca-Scott

Watermelon at the beach
Sweet and red
Like elusive youth
Laughing at nothing
Crying at everything
Matching the color of sunset
While the ocean purrs
Alluring promises

The salty wind
Adding a peculiar taste
To the thirst-quenching sweetness

Nothing is better than watermelon at the beach
Fighting the shadows inside the soul
Fears yet to come
Lurking behind sand dunes
Waiting
But the flavor is so delightful
And solitude can be fought
With a last bite in a summer night

Laura Zucca-Scott’s poem I let my words purr like a cat appeared at vox poetica in September 2010.
