A Dialogue of Bards
By Nicholas Gagnier

I found my muse deep in the refuse, the
dark intentions of once good men.
Like proud knots that have
come loose,
their most fundamental ideals were
left hanging by a thread.
The bread
and the butter
of another life, the
former Samaritan claimed
by inner storms of
unrest.
It’s a testament
to their light.
For without the wind’s
bane
and wisdom’s gradual
change,
they would have
withered and died,
or been
lost to their
minds,
only to starve
to death
anyway.
So they transform
and mould
hearts to
the doctrines,
integrity to a
caucus
of individuals
who promise
dishonestly,
trade their worth
in an
economy worth
nothing
to
disappear
anonymously into
the very end.
“And this is where you
search the depths
of inspiration?”
Why not? I reply,
steadfast in my
answer,
assertive in my
word choices.
In this cesspool of
a world, where
else would you
start?
They did not start
out as malevolent–was
it a gift from
birth or
the benefits learned
from what they
observed of
the world
around them?
Now ask again.
