Bad News
By Louis Gallo

Papa slouched
On his piano stool
And keyed a nocturne
Moist with dis-grace notes.
Outside
Constellations of darkening bugs
Effused ink into the night air,
Bespotting its otherwise
Clean, linen-fresh caulk.

Finising with a bold D-sharp,
Papa smiled
And I too smiled
As the echo of that note
Bewitched us into
A kind of gladness
Beyond purity
And all diminuendos.
