Juxtaposition
By Kay Middleton

just ask a moonbeam held against the clink
of crystals for comparison, ask him if his
throat is cooled by the ice, the night,
the loneliness. Ask him to dance on
a summer’s eve velveted with gardenia,
laced with starlight while chauffeurs
pass the time and polish fenders
like silver for guests.
Ask him if he waits for the sunrise.

Kay Middleton’s most recent poem to appear here was Driving Down (November 2011).
