Birthday

By Carolyn Gabb

Bear tucked tightly beside her,
she brought knees and hands to heart,
snuggling into her smallest shape.

Content, her eyelids fluttered, then
calmly closed, dreams on the way.
Fragrances of wild ginger and forest.
Images of rocks tucked in curves of trees.
Touchable thoughts of moss carpet
and smooth stone.
Mindful of sensations of silence,
absence of sound.

In her mind’s eye, memories
tiptoed and danced
as she traveled again
to birthday celebrations.
She smiled and smiled and smiled.

Carolyn Gabb’s poem Place to Stand Firm appeared here in March 2012.

  1. This is lovely. I have three daughters and two granddaughters. I can visualize this perfectly.
