Birthdays

By Harris Tobias

My birthdays stack up like dirty plates
After a party
Plastic forks and half eaten cake
Make for a tipsy pile
Another year, hooray,
I have come this far
Log another birthday in the file
Is that one more or one less?
Both I guess
And while I’m glad to have been around to see three score
And ten
I can’t help but wonder
Just how many more are left
And how many will not come again

Harris Tobias’ most recent poem to appear here was Weeds (June 2012).
