Blue

By Nicole Yurcaba

yellow swirling green combining perfectly
indigo peacock’s feathers
crisp wide-open Wyoming skies
Hank Williams’ “Long Gone Lonesome Blues”
Pacific, Atlantic oceans
Denim–light and dark
Teal, cerulean, various shades
Union Blue versus Confederate Gray

blue-ticked coonhound howling at October’s moon
wheat Blue Moon beer, honey-spiked
Turquoise–
rings, earrings, bracelets, studs, belts, Native American
Aquamarine–
March birthstone, a gem.

Blue–
cool, sophisticated wrinkled tarp covering split firewood–
must be the color of the blues

Blue–
Planter’s peanut can, gold lettering, dancing Mr. Peanut
Blue-ice, Busch Light can … I feel–
blue–
three days and not one single message.

Blue–
Oyster Cult playing in a blue ’96 Dodge Dakota SLT pick-up that he traded for an ’02 Silver Dodge Dakota–the worst mistake ever.

Turning blue–
holding breath, puffing cheeks–“I FUCKING SCREAMED UNTIL I WAS BLUE IN THE FACE!” What a perfect color for you …

Blue must be the color of–
tears, cold, fleece, suffocation, bruises, frozen, freezing, gel pens, water, sky, ink, panties, jeans, eyes, pens, polka dots, running streaks, Febreze spray bottles, lampshades, curtains, dyes, nail polish, Bug Juice, pick-ups, wagons, light specials, cooling flames, dying …
–the Union but we wore Confederate Gray …

Nicole Yurcaba’s poem Out Here in the Country appeared at vox poetica in September 2010.
