Edward Hopper’s Paintings

By Jean McLeod

Flat as a Nevada plain,
desolate structures
isolated people,
footsteps echo
on dead stone.

Joy sluiced
from homes,
rooms, diners,
Pullman cars
where warmth and humanity
might have been portrayed
into these worlds
of fools and pain.

Slashed with Van Gogh colors
customers fluoresce
in temporary sanctuary
against ultimate night
in a world without solace

or gods.
