Evening Egret
By Molly Frederick

A slender white bird stands
beside a waterfall.
Night draws near.
A breath of a bird—a
singular significance,
whitest of all whites—
as darkness engulfs him.
A fully formed idea.
A portal. A moment.
My bird, for I think of him
as mine.

How long will I remember him?
This gift at dusk after a day
obscured by dust.
Song-joy meant for wandering
eyes, this unexpected treasure
close by.
A more-than bird—a finding,
an ideal consequence.
Sprinkling silver on my day.
