It's just poetry, it won't bite

Nathaniel Spears writes poetry that we recognize for its uplifting message of motivation. Hear him talk about his lifelong passion for writing at 15 Minutes of Poetry. His most recent poem, Who Are We? is a gentle admonishment against holding a closed heart. This poem contains the same warning. Nathaniel related that this poem is based on a real-life experience. It gives us a concept of hope for unity at a time when things don’t feel particularly unified.

Friends
By Nathaniel Spears

When you look at my dark colored skin
you immediately compare me
to my peers.

Lord behold
you see my golds.

Your next step is to lock your doors.

If I turned the book over
would I be wrong?

If I seen your white skin
got scared and ran home

in fear of being captured
and enslaved?

If I thought everyone white was evil
wanting to tie up people of color
and beat them?

Instead of turning the book over,
let’s throw the book out.

If we gave each other a chance,
instead of stereotypes
we might just be

friends.
