Glorious Ocean

Glorious Ocean
By Matthew Hammerton

In you, I see the symbols of life and death,
of reality and unreality:
Primordial life-giving waters
Dark depths of shadow and obscurity
Endless plains of shifting blue
The vigour of youth
and the slow, tired, knowing glance
of one who has lived through all ages and epochs

In your presence, I have one wish:
That you remain always in your grandeur
So that when there is nothing left for me
When the weariness of living has exhausted me,
I can surrender myself into your waters
And be lost into the seas of time.
