Great-Aunt Josephine: First Lesson
By Joanie DiMartino
(reprinted from Strange Girls, Little Red Tree Publishing, 2010)
You can see the mare’s breath
in a morning crisp
with dried leaves scattered
like roasted peanut hulls after a show,
her coat the same color brown,
only shiny in this watery
autumn dawn. You stroke
her muzzle, talk softly, offer sugar
cubes. Here to discover
each other’s temperaments
so you may meld your torso
to the mare’s bare back
like a glittery Centauridies,
you whisper how cramped places
make you skittish, recall
kitchenettes sized like horse stalls,
how one summer night
you bolted toward a grass field
dotted with circus tents to shake
out your hair under dark canvas
gleaming with stars, how you, too,
bristle under restraints,
be they leather or silk.
Lovely memories of horses and their owners. Nicley done.
