It's just poetry, it won't bite

I am as a child, lost

Susan Davis Gabbay’s most recent poem to appear here was “Whither are you bound” (November 2017)

I am as a child, lost
Tears about to flow
I have awakened
In a world I do not know.

Violence and hatred
Suddenly overt
Whence this bitterness
This mad desire to hurt?

Most of all I sorrow
To see the ugly face
Worn by my country—
Oh, where is her former grace?
