R.
Martin Basden, a native of Norfolk, VA, lives in his hometown with Kay,
his bride of 47 years. After retiring from an engineering career, this
father and grandfather is turning his passion for words into art to be
enjoyed by others. Marty loves to dig in the dirt as much as he loves
to delve into human nature. He sings in various choral groups and as a
soloist in different venues. His poem today will be relatable for many
of you who labor at the whim of a demanding muse. Some of you didn’t
sleep last night in service to said muse. You know who you are.
Interruption
By R. Martin Basden
The muse drags me
from rut to rut
with careless regard for
my current pale comfort
Deaf to an objection of
not quite finished yet
she bribes me
with easy familiarity
that something much better
requires my attention
And with a finger tip
silences my complaint
points to a cache
of virginal phrases
promising
to name them
tomorrow
I love this wonderful poem. I can certainly relate to ‘pale comfort’ and the ‘promise of virginal phrases’…and empathize with each well placed word.
“promising/to name them/tomorrow” Great line breaks, which add layers of meaning. For me, the poem is as much about memory as it is about writing. I love it.
Beautiful Marty. Gives us hope.
