It's just poetry, it won't bite

La Banque Gauche

Go back and read Kenneth Weene’s last poem to appear here, Chimera. Then check out his books and the occasional blog he posts at Basil and Spice so you can get a sense for how varied his writings are. This poem pulls us to another life in another place with this character, who is himself traveling to a different time in his own way.

La Banque Gauche
By Kenneth Weene

An old man mutters to himself,
seated at an outdoor cafe
watching pedestrians march along
L’Avenue des Champs Élysées.
He has a conversation with ghosts
who once filled la banque gauche
and coffee shops on Avenue St. Germain.
He eats fromage with a fresh baguette,
savors coffee–sweet and black,
tells himself that he is not alone.
Surely Picasso is coming back.
