Bette Hileman paints vivid pictures with her poems (Danger). Here she describes the setting but even more aptly, the emotional landscape.
Leave Taking
By Bette Hileman
There was an evening
When you couldn’t stop crying.
We were sitting at dinner.
Candles were lit.
The food was delicious.
I was wearing an attractive dress.
The room was quiet.
“Why?” I asked.
“It’s all too beautiful.
It won’t come again,” you said.
“But why?” I repeated.
“I will see you.
There will be other times.”
Ten years have passed.
You are no longer part of my life.
Now, I understand
Your tears.
Wow, this poem quietly sneaks up and lands an emotional punch at the end. Well done!
Life can be sad.
Wow, very emotional. Nicely done, Bette.
