Lipstick and Menthol

11.16.10 Posted in today's words by

Val B Russell’s poem Passages Internal appeared here in July. Her poem today is about her mother. In Val’s words: “My mother was a chimney in pumps and lipstick who requires no embellishment.” How poetic a description and how descriptive a poem!

Lipstick and Menthol
By Val B Russell

A perfect pucker of Revlon red
Where’s the Fire?
A candy apple tattoo lip print
On the circle of a filter
Poised in the air like Holly go lightly
Between fingers dipped in a matching shade
Knees crossed and head tilted
Intent listening pose perfected
Her eyes dance and flirt with leaving
She slyly eyes the door and blinks
Cigarette extinguished on a crystal pyre
She reapplies another layer of lipstick
Snapping her purse shut she declares her departure with an air kiss
And drags her persona behind her like a ball and chain
