Charles Clifford Brooks III has been busy since we last saw him! Nights at the Plantation appeared here in August 2011. Today’s poem is from his new collection, Athena Departs.

Overlooking Tom’s Garden
By Charles Clifford Brooks III

This evening,
African guineas
sneak up
from underbrush
in Lexington.
All three look
mournful,
cluck,
cry in low branches.

They seem
anguished
over another
dying day.
They are misplaced,
cast off,
killing time
while so far
from home.
