Where is the consulate
for my country? she asked,
naming where we stood
by my reference desk. Her eyes,
anxious, drops shining
them. This is your country,
I said, no consul here. That can’t
be, she said—I’m not at home, can’t
find safety, can’t find sense
or grace. We held hands now.
When did we start? Me too,
I told her. Me too.
