Seaside

Sabrina Gutierrez’ poem Insanity appeared here in September 2014.

Seaside
By Sabrina Gutierrez

Water pushed and pulled from underneath me,
I let the warm sunlight tickle my nose.
Soft blue stretched beyond what the eye could see.

The hot sand seeped through my small, pale fingers.
Looking up, I happily burrowed my toes.
Water pushed and pulled from underneath me.

A splash: my tongue recoiled from sea spray’s salt
Mommy cradled me as ocean’s tide rose.
Soft blue stretched beyond what the eye could see.

The seagulls soared, singing their woeful song,
Gliding mid-air, opposite the wind blows.
Water pushed and pulled from underneath me.

Slimy kelp swirled and wrapped around my legs.
Bless the simplicity that youth bestows,
Soft blue stretched beyond what the eye could see.

I bid the soft shores a tearful goodbye
And nuzzled up to my mom’s neck in a doze.
Water pushed and pulled from underneath me
Soft blue stretched beyond what the eye could see.
