Thank You
By Katrina Guarascio

Thank you for the dance in the lightning storm,
for the blowing wind that placed my hair in your eyes,
and the shattered glass that bites at bare feet.

Thank you for the words of apology
delivered with lowered eyes
and a choke in your throat.
Thank you for meaning it.

Thank you for the night at the bar,
when we held each other in clumsy caresses,
screaming lyrics drunkenly into each other’s face.
Thank you for remembering that we never had a song.

Thank you for finally releasing your grip on my mind,
for letting time and space work its magic to heal
the wound you dug in me.

Thank you for telling me I have beautiful eyes
when it was too dark for you to really see them.

Thank you for the drinks on the porch
after everyone else was gone,
for the last cigarette in your pack and the conversation
long after the hour of reason when our lips say things
our minds have long hidden.

Thank you for the dance in the lightning storm,
for pulling me back in for that second hug, that final embrace.
Thank you for letting me know
you were sorry too.
