Priyanka Bhowmick’s poem Shadow was published here in July. Today she shares a persona poem, presenting the concept of aging as experienced not by a man or a woman, but by a pond.

The Cry of a Gloomy Pond
By Priyanka Bhowmick

They come and stare
At the barrenness of my eyes
Where nothing remains of me
Other than the vicious filth.
My soul has been surrendered to the soil
That comforts me in her clench,
Reminding me of days gone by,
When lovers used to sit by me
Holding hands and singing
The eternal melodies of love.
Birds quenched their thirst,
Drinking my water as if it were wine,
And played in my lap as if they were my children,
While the trees admired their beauty,
Gazing at my heart as if at a mirror.
Heaven cried upon my shoulders,
Raining down on me tears and blessings.
And now that I’ve grown old and ugly,
They turn away their somber faces,
Letting me cry upon my emptiness.

  1. You paint such a sad reality of life. While watching others go on with theirs.
    Very well done.

Great point of view. Great poem.

  3. Gracie says:

This is so beautiful. I’m going to linger a little bit longer at the next pond I come across.
