The Kindness of Strangers

Today a stranger paid for my coffee
without even leaving her name.
Today I helped a poet I’ve only
met once get his first book published.
Such kindness can’t be said to be common,
but it happens just often enough
to keep us from believing the worst,
to keep me believing in our worth.
