The Maple
By Harris Tobias

Our storm-damaged maple repairs itself
That dear tree from whose branch we hung
a swing. A majestic and a giving thing must now
Begin repairs in that slow and careful way trees have
A limb that took sixty years to grow
becomes another scar. A history of calamity revealed
A veteran of a thousand storms and droughts
Are written on its barky hide
Repairs begin with the single bud and,
With the patience only trees can bear
It sets out to grow another bough
