The Trail

Abigale Louise LeCavalier did not receive her name, she chose it: her last name to be the same as her two boys, Louise for the grandmother she dearly loved, and Abigale because it was as different from her birth name as she could get and she has always loved it. Abigale has seen The Breakfast Club around 100 times, but remembers the first time best. She looked like Anthony Michael Hall (Brian), wanted to be Molly Ringwald (Claire), and identified most with Ally Sheedy (Allison). Her life now consists of trying to make her outsides look like what she identifies inside. It is the hardest thing she has ever done. You can find her work at various print and online journals.

The Trail
By Abigale Louise LeCavalier

There was a sticky train
of sweet apple sauce,
starting in the kitchen
and making craters down the hallway;
not so clean,
this getaway.

Smeared under the door
as it was opened
and again closed.

Trailed across the newly polished
hardwood floor.

The fruit ended at his bed,
a dirty spoon in his hand still.

And I wiped off his face,
and I kissed his forehead.

“goodnight.”

Watching him smile
even as he slept.
