Tornado
By Jean McLeod

No one expected betrayal before noon
when supple air gave way
to the metallic taste
of an unleashed jinn
who sparked fireworks
from transformers
and ran amok snapping trees
one after the next
until sound volleyed
down the valley.
Sharp slaps of wind
snapped nerve, rope, and roof,
the tenebrous swirl
suckled at the pond
gorged on ground and town
all drowned in humid air,
flung far its feast
human, home, and beast.
Spent, finally, as jinns are wont,
it returned to its lantern,
as its horrow faded to a sibilant
……………hiss
of air escaping a balloon
and left the town to chaos.

Marveous writing, word choice, internal rhyme, tension, alliteration, line breaks and r. This one spins like a tornado in my mind.

Great job, Jean. This poem is both visual and auditory.
