Trumpets

By Harris Tobias

How to explain that flash of brass
That yellow stain in what was gray and dead
The daffodil, its trumpet calling from the flower bed
A trumpet call no ear can hear
So heroic yet so sweet
So tell me, you who know it all
Does it signal Summer’s fall
Or Winter’s slow retreat?
