Unexpected
By J.B. Hogan

How was he to know
when first he knew her,
how could he have seen
in that first shy moment
with the books spread
out before them,
the disparate path each took
to that place, that day
so unexpected.

How was he to know
in that half hour
in that short time
the depths soon
to be plumbed
in search of her
own depths, depths
covered so well in the
temporary but easily
breached sense of mere
pleasant introduction.
