A Good Summer
By Laura Zucca-Scott
This summer was a good summer
You told me you wanted to die
I told you that you couldn’t
So we played cards
Late in the evening
Loud music playing outside
Late in the evening
Loud music playing outside
Lives still racing
In the heat of the closing day
The rhythm of our words
In the heat of the closing day
The rhythm of our words
You told me you were tired
And ready to go to sleep
I was too
So we wished each other good night
The music stopped
The house too silent
Soon we drifted away
Our worlds separate
And yet so close
This summer was a good summer
Not the summer I had wished for
But a good summer
Lovely, Laura. I feel this was about your dad.
Oh so simply poignant, read again and again, feeling each time.
Laura, you captured the poignant goodbye beautifully. No heavy-handedness, you let the poem tell us gently. Wonderful!
