Two Beers Down
By KC Bosch and Stan Galloway

Trumpet vine
reaching through slats
from sun-baked deck
into cool dark tavern:
two beers down,
two cheers raised.
We were drinking locally
but thinking long distance
where the same sun
milder perhaps
mocked miles
minutes turning into years
within a single afternoon.
Friends commiserating
in the absence of
the ones they’d each prefer,
relationships made ethereal
by damned cartography,
fingerprints reduced
to satellite transmissions,
reality invading if it could,
but held in check
by camaraderie
and two more beers.

  1. Sounds like a place I would like to be.

  2. Nicole Yurcaba says:

Perfection! The best drinking poem I’ve ever read.

  3. Jeanette Gallagher says:

What a warm and wonderful work of art! It speaks of relationships with friends who seldom see each other and the joy of being together on this occasion. I can see the picture and pleasure of their reunion if only for a short time. Sincere and heartfelt it’s beauty evokes empathy within the reader. I love it!

  4. Stan says:

Thanks for the comments, Jeanette(s) and Nicole. It evokes memories for me as well; I’m glad it successfully carries that sense of nostalgia and longing that KC and I were trying to capture.
