Soul Food
By Nate Spears

The love from my mother’s pie
Warms my digestive tract as it passes through
Each slice warms me up
As it flows through
My soul

The sweet potatoes thicken our bond
The lemon extract stings
The milk soothes
The sugar makes it all so sweet,

For these ingredients
Solidify
How much
She loves me.

This time of year
Ingredients mean more than just food preparation
For me
At least

It’s food for the soul
We spread love
Congregate
And eat.

Nate Spears’ poem I’m Gone appeared at vox poetica in February 2011.
