Dead Now

Anthony Watkins’ new online journal, Better Than Starbucks, launches online later this month.

Dead Now
By Anthony Watkins

We buried the nephew
in granite.

The priest
called forth Lazarus,
both dead now

Sprinkled and
smoked the urn.
We all ate Jesus.

Blood now reserved
for priests and deacons

Before unremembered plague,
grandmother’s communal cup,
grandfather’s gold medallions.
Both dead now

Like mother,
like Jesus, and Mohamed,
not the prophet, my friend.

Dead now, as I will be.
