A Disturbance
By James G Piatt

The burnt willow trees
On the smoldering edge
Of the lazy stagnant brook,
Bend to the wind line an
Anxious crowd of people
Waiting for the night train:
I watch in silence feeling a
Disturbance in the earth,
I turn away humming a song
Of the past when the air was pure,
Then slowly walk away, wondering if
The earth will be here tomorrow.

  1. Rest your fears. The earth will evolve. It’s the people that need help.

  2. Jeanette Gallagher says:

The imagery in Mr. Piatt’s poet is so clearly disturbing, I can almost feel the train rumbling toward the anxious people while the earth shudders. I don’t think he’s an alarmist, however. I feel if he can hum a song perhaps there’s a hint of hope even as he wonders about tomorrow. I like this thought provoking poem!
