Silly Sammy
By Paul Goldberg

Silly Sammy sat in her chair
afraid to move out of plain fear.

Afraid of what the day would bring
she made a decision not to do anything.

Afraid of good fortune for fear of its loss,
afraid of ill tidings for fear of the cost,

afraid to hear the news of the day,
afraid life might get in her way.

There she sat alone in her room
with fear and fright of impending doom.

She thought of her life as a terrible plot.
She thought she’d never get out of the spot.

Fate put another twist in her tale:
outside her door piled the mail.

Among the letters left unread
was a marriage proposal from her sweetheart Fred,

a notice that her aunt left her gobbles of cash,
and news that her book was an award-winning smash.

So if you recognize yourself in Sammy’s travail,
at least go out and check your mail.
