Durable good

Durable good
By R Martin Basden

They move among us, unselfish.
They take little, give much,
do their job with minimum maintenance, time after time,
regardless of interruption or delay,
in spite of objection or critique,
underappreciated, ignored, perhaps slandered.

They work, they care, they love,
When love is the only answer for the deprived, the disenfranchised,
in place of family, instead of blood,
they offer concern beyond residence,
advice above expectation.

They are the durable good, the lasting impression,
who bear the burden of an ever increasing need
to expunge ignorance, imbue tolerance,
give foundation for a lifetime of learning.

They are the durable good, the memory makers,
who show how to be a positive, contributing,
citizen of the world.

The durable good,
the teachers of our children.
