Winds
By Murray Dunlap

In a cardiac version of life
There are many things to believe in
Surely my heart stopped when a man ran red and almost killed me
But I don’t know
I know nothing
But pain
And the quiet misery of starting a life over
And learning that I am not good at love anymore
Again my heart stops
And again, the pain is real
But I will agree to a heart transplant. And try to find new love
Quietly, I listen to the winds howl
And try to make sense of the new, odd world before me
I am quiet here in pain, but listen to the winds,
Hoping

  1. Very strong-expresses so well this writer’s great struggles in life, physically and emotionally. Yet, he so admirably goes forward with hope and strong determination to live and love again.

  2. Oh, if this is fact…I pray you will get the new heart and find love. This poem is gripping. Remember love is a state of mind.

I am glad that the poem ends with “hoping.” Without that, we are lost.
