Götterdämmerung
By Frieda Landau

Twas love that killed the gods and burned
Valhalla to cinder and ashes.
The funeral pyre of Odin’s daughter
And her god-bedeviled lover avenged
Their deaths, flames leaping the Rainbow Bridge
To catch the vaulted halls where lovely Freya,
Consort of the king of gods, one-eyed Odin,
Once blessed their forbidden union.
Not Thor, with his mighty hammer, nor
Skillful Loki could turn the course of fate
That doomed the rulers of the Northern sky.

  1. Sharon Poch says:

    Freida,
Masterful use of mythology to express so much more than a tragic love story. My favorite lines–the last three. “Not Thor, with his mighty hammer, nor/Skillful Loki could turn the course of fate/That doomed the rulers of the Northern sky.” Lessons still not learned.

  2. You’ve some it up beautifully.
