It's just poetry, it won't bite

Imperfections & Impermanence

06.24.10 Posted in today's words by

BR Belletryst’s most recent work here (untitled) was part of Contributor Series 5: Dramatis Personae and in it BR took us through the development of a writer (him) and the milestone markers of great works that he read along the way. Today’s poem explores more terrain that is familiar to many a writer: imperfection. His take on it gives us a roadmap for what to do when we fall short of the perfection standard. Read it and then celebrate something imperfect that you have written.

Imperfections & Impermanence
By BR Belletryst

In darkness,
I come to myself;
open my chest, and breathe.
The fog of etiquette
and expectation lifts,
and I can feel the true pulse,
can touch the divine within.
In light,
I finger at the edges;
pry open my mind
to decipher my decisions.
I bleed out my concern
as the hungry leeches of
guilt and regret
gulp down the feast, and are sated.
In quiet,
I sing inner conversations;
let the voices inside delegate, argue, laugh in symposium.
Synchronous dissonance to
dishevel the selves,
to delve into the truth
and decide what is real.
In chaos,
I truly find myself;
can hear the whisper
turned inward,
turned strong and able,
willing to expose
and believe in what I can say.
In analysis,
I find conflict and open
wide the doors
only kept ajar by feigned hope;
find anew the sacred
in what I felt was flawed,
and really is flawed, yet perfect.

    This is one of the best poems I’ve read in a long time about self doubt leading to acceptance.

  2. Bobbie Troy says:

    Yes, something we call all relate to. I love the title, the theme, and the ending.
