The Pale Goth’s Mother Compliments The Pale Goth
By Nicole Yurcaba

You’re like a piece of art, carefully pieced together,
designed to provoke questions.
Sometimes I don’t understand.

            Thanks, Mom. I’m not sure
            what to say. Some days,
your eyes say Is this my child?.

You look so beautiful today.

            Thanks, Mom. Do you remember
the time you asked Do you dress
like that for attention?
You wondered if I’d ever leave this phase.
Aren’t you glad I didn’t?

You’re definitely always yourself.

             Thanks, Mom. I mean,
what’s the point of being
someone I’m not? If I’m not me,
then who will be? It’s a tough
job. Believe me. Some days,
I don’t want to do it, but if I don’t,
who will?
