Picnic
By Christopher Roe

Upon the abandoned altar
of a blue slate plate
lies a half-eaten sardine sandwich.
Upon its cratered surface
a tiny red explorer
plants the flag of its kind.
Word goes forth and soon
the sandwich is buried
beneath a boiling red sea
and a line of the faithful pismires
carry off small white tablets.
The red sea parts revealing
unctuous, cloudy fish eyes
staring blindly heavenward.
And the monolithic miracle
of loaves and fishes
slowly disappears
and millions are fed.
